About This Disaster

Destructive severe thunderstorms struck Salina and central Kansas late Monday, June 8, 2026, producing extreme straight-line winds, heavy rain, large hail, widespread tree damage, downed power poles, transportation impacts, and residential damage. The National Weather Service reported a 113 mph wind gust three miles southwest of Salina, and an NWS severe thunderstorm warning described the storm as a destructive storm with 100 mph wind gusts, warning that flying debris could be deadly and that homes, businesses, mobile homes, trees, and power systems could see considerable damage. At this point, the damage appears primarily from extreme straight-line wind, not a confirmed tornado, though KSAL reported there had been a tornado warning, a rotating wall cloud near Brookville, and a possible rain-wrapped tornado report west of town.
