
Eastern Washington Wildfire Outbreak August 2026
A widespread wildfire outbreak across Eastern Washington escalated into a major wildland–urban interface disaster on August 1, when the Old Trails, Autumn Lane, and Fairview fires swept into communities around Spokane.
Approximately 64,000 people were ordered to evacuate, with some reporting placing the peak near 67,000, and hundreds of homes, businesses, and other buildings were destroyed. No fire-related deaths or major injuries have been confirmed, although damage assessments remain preliminary and there are reports of people missing.
As of August 5, the three Spokane-area fires had burned a combined 10,546 acres and remained 0% contained. Federal fire officials list 707 structures lost but officials have not yet released a confirmed residential-home-only total.

The broader Eastern Washington outbreak remains active, including the Kaiser Canyon Fire at 136,713 acres and 48% containment, Sinlahekin at 117,078 acres and 9%, Little Giant at 70,853 acres and 0%, Modrite at 51,836 acres and 35%, and Bradeen Hill at 4,367 acres and 42%.

Samaritan's Purse
Volunteers will assist homeowners affected by recent wildfires and will help in Jesus' Name with tree work, content recovery, debris cleanup, and sifting. There will be opportunities for overnight and day volunteers. No skills are necessary prior to serving. Volunteers will be led and instructed by experienced team leads. Samaritan's Purse
Samaritan's Purse is set up with volunteer opportunities available in Spokane, WA. Each volunteer session must be 1-2 weeks long, with arrivals only on Sundays or Wednesdays. Orientation will take place at 7:30am only. Volunteers must be able to work a full day, ending at 4:30pm. *Please note for this location a Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to discuss availability and scheduling; requested dates are not guaranteed until scheduled. Please do not make any travel arrangements until your trip has been confirmed. Volunteers will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), provided by Samaritan's Purse, that includes a Tyvek suit, N-95 Mask, goggles and gloves.
