Destructive severe thunderstorms struck Salina and central Kansas late Monday, June 8, 2026, producing extreme straight-line winds, heavy rain, large hail, widespread tree damage, downed power poles, transportation impacts, and residential damage. The National Weather Service reported a 113 mph wind gust three miles southwest of Salina , and an NWS severe thunderstorm warning described the storm as a destructive storm with 100 mph wind gusts , warning that flying debris could be deadly and that homes, businesses, mobile homes, trees, and power systems could see considerable damage. At this point, the damage appears primarily from extreme straight-line wind , not a confirmed tornado, though KSAL reported there had been a tornado warning, a rotating wall cloud near Brookville, and a possible rain-wrapped tornado report west of town.
At the request of the Kansas Division of Emergency Management, Minuteman Disaster Response has deployed volunteer teams to Salina, Kansas, to support ongoing recovery efforts following severe storms earlier this month. Volunteers are focused on tree and vegetative debris removal, helping homeowners address large, damaged trees and debris that require specialized equipment and technical skills to remove safely. Our Mass Feeding Arm and Rapid Response Heavy teams are serving families across Salina, KS, following the severe storm on June 8 that impacted over half of their population. We will be providing free, hot meals and clearing large fallen debris.
