Catastrophic flash flooding struck northern Nepal and the Nepal–Tibet border region on August 26, 2026 , devastating communities throughout the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli River corridor. At least 1,127 people have been confirmed dead in Nepal, 4,858 remain missing or unaccounted for, and more than 6,500 people have been rescued. The disaster has affected an estimated 1.6 million people , with Rasuwa and Nuwakot among the hardest-hit districts. The disaster was triggered by a massive ice-and-rock avalanche associated with a glacier collapse near the Nepal–China border, sending an enormous surge of water, mud, rock and debris through the river system. Entire communities were swept away or buried as the flood moved through Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts and continued downstream. Impact The scale of destruction is catastrophic. Homes, businesses, roads, bridges, power stations, hydropower facilities and other critical infrastructure have been damaged or destroyed. Entire villages have been impacted, leaving families displaced and communities cut off from essential services. Destroyed roads and bridges continue to create significant challenges for search-and-rescue teams and humanitarian organizations attempting to reach isolated communities and deliver assistance. Hydropower facilities along the Trishuli River remain a major focus of rescue operations. Hundreds of workers remain unaccounted for at multiple hydropower projects , with specialized teams working to access underground powerhouses and tunnels blocked by mud, water and debris. International travelers and foreign nationals were also caught in the disaster. Search and identification efforts continue as families in Nepal and around the world wait for information about missing loved ones. Mercy Chefs is mobilizing feeding support for communities impacted by the catastrophic flooding in Nepal. Through trusted local relationships and an established feeding program that has been serving in Nepal over the past year, the organization is positioned to provide critical assistance to some of the hardest-hit communities. With many areas isolated and traditional access routes severely impacted, the response presents significant logistical challenges. Mercy Chefs is working alongside trusted local partners to provide food and essential support to affected communities.
Convoy of Hope is distributing food, clean drinking water, sheltering materials, and personal hygiene kits. As local stores, homes, and resources were washed away, survivors’ needs can only be met through outside kindness. Convoy of Hope remains committed to serving impacted communities.
Samaritan’s Purse has sent a team of disaster relief specialists to Nepal to work with trusted Christian partners on the ground, whom we also worked with after the terrible 2015 earthquake and its aftershocks. Thousands of families are in need. We will focus on emergency feeding and providing relief items such as tarps, blankets, solar lights, hygiene kits, and more.

Hope Force is responding through a trusted local partner in Nepal, with whom we’ve had a long-standing relationship since the devastating 2015 earthquakes. Over the years, we’ve sent teams annually to support rebuilding efforts and provide medical clinics. Our partner has deep relationships within the affected communities, and we will be looking for ways to come alongside them, strengthen their efforts, and help meet the needs of those impacted.
