Catastrophic flash flooding struck northern Nepal and the Nepal–Tibet border region on August 26, 2026, devastating communities throughout the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli River corridor.
At least 1,127 people have been confirmed dead in Nepal, 4,858 remain missing or unaccounted for, and more than 6,500 people have been rescued. The disaster has affected an estimated 1.6 million people, with Rasuwa and Nuwakot among the hardest-hit districts.
The disaster was triggered by a massive ice-and-rock avalanche associated with a glacier collapse near the Nepal–China border, sending an enormous surge of water, mud, rock and debris through the river system. Entire communities were swept away or buried as the flood moved through Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts and continued downstream.
The scale of destruction is catastrophic. Homes, businesses, roads, bridges, power stations, hydropower facilities and other critical infrastructure have been damaged or destroyed. Entire villages have been impacted, leaving families displaced and communities cut off from essential services.
Destroyed roads and bridges continue to create significant challenges for search-and-rescue teams and humanitarian organizations attempting to reach isolated communities and deliver assistance.
Hydropower facilities along the Trishuli River remain a major focus of rescue operations. Hundreds of workers remain unaccounted for at multiple hydropower projects, with specialized teams working to access underground powerhouses and tunnels blocked by mud, water and debris.
International travelers and foreign nationals were also caught in the disaster. Search and identification efforts continue as families in Nepal and around the world wait for information about missing loved ones.
Search, rescue and recovery operations remain active throughout the affected region as responders work through extremely difficult mountainous terrain.
Conditions remain dangerous throughout the affected region. Continued monsoon rainfall, unstable slopes, landslides, damaged roads and bridges, debris and altered river channels remain significant risks for survivors and response teams.
Authorities continue monitoring conditions upstream while teams work to restore transportation, electricity and communications infrastructure. The disaster disrupted approximately 431 megawatts of electricity-generating capacity, although telecommunications service has now been restored across much of the affected area.
The scale of destruction indicates Nepal will face a significant long-term recovery involving housing, infrastructure, livelihoods, utilities and support for displaced families.
Nepal has mobilized more than 20,000 military, police and security personnel, along with disaster management agencies, medical teams and humanitarian organizations for search, rescue, evacuation, relief and recovery operations.
Specialized international teams are assisting with complex technical rescue operations, particularly at damaged hydropower facilities and underground tunnels.
Immediate priorities continue to include search and rescue, emergency medical care, food and safe drinking water, temporary shelter, relief supplies, transportation and logistics, communications support, and assistance for isolated communities.
As rescue operations continue, the humanitarian response is expanding to address displaced families, medical needs, feeding, shelter, clean water, hygiene, emotional and psychological support, and restoration of access to affected communities.

Response efforts continue to expand across the affected region. Samaritan’s Purse has delivered more than 40 tons of emergency relief supplies to Kathmandu, including water filters, tarps, blankets, hygiene kits and solar lights intended to assist approximately 2,600 families through local organizations serving flood-affected communities.
Other U.S.-based organizations are mobilizing medical teams and mobile clinics, emergency feeding, food and clean water, shelter materials, hygiene supplies, financial assistance, rescue equipment and other essential resources. Many are working directly through trusted local churches, ministries, nonprofits and community leaders already serving throughout Nepal.
The broader humanitarian response also includes the Nepal Red Cross Society, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), UNICEF, World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations agencies, local churches and ministry partners, and government response teams from multiple countries.
Response efforts include search and rescue, emergency feeding, medical assistance, shelter, clean water, hygiene supplies, essential relief items, transportation and logistics, psychosocial support, and assistance for isolated communities.
Many responding organizations are working through trusted local churches, ministries, nonprofits and community leaders already serving in Nepal, allowing assistance to move through established relationships into affected communities.
