The National Weather Service estimates winds of 70–80 mph in Kansas City, Kansas , with the most extensive damage across northern Wyandotte County from Piper through Quindaro, while winds near 65–75 mph damaged an apartment complex across the river in Kansas City, Missouri, displacing 61 residents. At least 60 Kansas City, Kansas homes are reported to need major repair, while approximately 3,500 homes require licensed electrical repairs before power can be safely restored; Kansas Governor Laura Kelly declared a state of disaster emergency for Wyandotte County on August 21 . Local officials are actively requesting volunteers and skilled labor for debris removal, cleanup, food and water distribution, shelter support, resident welfare checks, and electrical repairs.
Teams are preparing for a two week deployment of trained sawyets and heavy equipment.
