About This Disaster

Tropical Storm Arthur was a short-lived tropical cyclone, but its deep tropical moisture produced repeated heavy rainfall across Mississippi after the storm weakened. Flooding damaged homes, businesses, public roads, bridges, and other infrastructure across a broad portion of southern and south-central Mississippi.

The most significant documented residential damage is in Harrison County, where 183 homes and nine businesses have been reported affected. Pearl River County reported 35 affected homes, while Hancock County reported 21 homes, one farm, five roads, and one bridge affected.

Flooding also created concerns at two dams. Approximately 30 homes near Anchor Lake in Pearl River County were evacuated as a precaution when high water and erosion raised concerns about the dam. Officials later reported that the structure was functioning as designed and lifted the evacuation order. A dam at Swan Lake in Harrison County was also monitored after erosion undermined part of the structure, and county crews constructed a temporary coffer dam near the spillway.

MEMA deployed four swift-water rescue teams during the emergency response. American Red Cross shelters remain available in Hancock, Harrison, and Stone counties. State, county, municipal, volunteer, faith-based, and private-sector organizations continue supporting survivors and assessing unmet needs.

The following counties have submitted official damage reports to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. Damage categories range from affected to destroyed. These numbers will change through the assessment process.
