Situation Overview Recovery efforts continue across north-central Venezuela following the powerful earthquakes that struck near Morón on June 24, 2026 . The back-to-back earthquakes—measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 just 39 seconds apart—caused catastrophic damage across La Guaira, Caracas, Carabobo , and surrounding communities, making this one of the country's most devastating natural disasters in recent history. According to Reuters' initial earthquake coverage , the twin earthquakes were the strongest to strike the region in more than a century and triggered widespread structural collapse and humanitarian need. While emergency search-and-rescue operations have concluded, humanitarian recovery remains in full operation. According to the Associated Press' latest recovery update , the confirmed death toll has risen to 5,069 , more than 16,700 people have been injured , 1,331 aftershocks have been recorded, 190 buildings have completely collapsed , and hundreds of additional buildings, bridges, roads, and public facilities sustained significant damage. Recovery crews continue clearing debris, inspecting damaged structures, restoring critical infrastructure, and supporting thousands of families displaced by the disaster. Communities throughout the affected region continue facing significant humanitarian needs as families work to recover from widespread destruction. Current priorities include restoring housing, repairing transportation networks and utilities, expanding access to healthcare, providing emotional and spiritual care, and helping families rebuild homes, businesses, and livelihoods.
