The back-to-back earthquakes—measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 just 39 seconds apart—caused catastrophic damage across La Guaira, Caracas, Carabobo , and surrounding communities, making this one of the country's most devastating natural disasters in recent history. According to Reuters' initial earthquake coverage , the twin earthquakes were the strongest to strike the region in more than a century and triggered widespread structural collapse and humanitarian need. While emergency search-and-rescue operations have concluded, humanitarian recovery remains in full operation. According to the Associated Press' latest recovery update , the confirmed death toll has risen to 5,069 , more than 16,700 people have been injured , 1,331 aftershocks have been recorded, 190 buildings have completely collapsed , and hundreds of additional buildings, bridges, roads, and public facilities sustained significant damage.
