Super Typhoon Sinlaku, one of the strongest storms of the year, brought destructive winds, torrential rain, flash flooding, and widespread outages to Guam and the broader Mariana Islands. On Guam, wind gusts peaked near 88 mph and heavy rain caused flash flooding, multiple power outages, and school closures, while the storm also threatened roads, utilities, and military installations. Reported impacts included uprooted trees, downed power lines, flooded homes, impassable roads, and sheltering needs for more than 1,000 people across the region. Saipan saw heavy structural damage in places like Susupe, where a commercial roof was removed and a blue sedan was overturned; officials also reported widespread flooding, uprooted trees, and downed power lines. The New York Times report said many of Saipan’s roughly 43,000 residents lost electricity, and roads were “impassable” in some areas. Across the Northern Mariana Islands, the storm brought prolonged destructive winds because it moved slowly, which worsened damage to roofs, buildings, trees, and utilities. AP reported that the typhoon pounded the islands for hours before daybreak, with trees uprooted and wooden and metal buildings crumbling. Reports also indicate that shelters were used and recovery needs were growing, with some sources saying outages could last weeks in parts of the islands.
Samaritan’s Purse sent a 767 cargo aircraft on April 18, from Greensboro Airlift Response Center in North Carolina with 40 tons of relief including clean water systems, shelter material, and solar lights. A Disaster Assistance Response Team will work alongside local Operation Christmas Child church partners to get relief to those who need it most. A second flight will will carry materials for an outpatient medical clinic and bring solar lights, generators, jerry cans, blankets, and shelter plastic.
