Severe storms and tornadoes moved across South Mississippi on Wednesday evening, May 6, 2026, producing a significant tornado outbreak across multiple counties . 26 injuries and no deaths have been reported. The National Weather Service has confirmed 8 tornadoes in Mississippi from the May 6–7 severe weather event, including a long-track EF3 tornado that was more than a mile wide and remained on the ground for 69.8 miles from Wilkinson County to Lawrence County , and an EF2 tornado that tracked through Lamar County near Purvis. MEMA reports 403 homes and 21 businesses damaged statewide , including 78 homes destroyed and 77 homes with major damage , with the highest confirmed residential damage in Lincoln County and Lamar County. Damage estimates (as of 5/12/26 - MEMA notes these figures may change as assessments continue): Lincoln County: 281 homes. Lamar County: 82 homes Franklin County: 13 homes Lawrence County: 14 homes Forrest County: 2 homes Jefferson Davis County: 5 homes Marion County: 3 homes Wilkinson County: 3 homes. Response and recovery operations are ongoing, including feeding sites, donation intake, volunteer intake, private-property debris cleanup, and support from faith-based and volunteer organizations listed below. Volunteers will assist homeowners affected by recent tornadoes and will help in Jesus' Name with debris cleanup, chainsaw work and roof tarping. There will be opportunities for overnight and day volunteers. No skills are necessary prior to serving. Volunteers will be led and instructed by experienced team leads.
Church Of The Highlands Disaster Response team is responding to provide debris management and tree/chainsaw work after the tornados impacted South Mississippi.
Operation Blessing is providing hot meals, supplies and a small amount of work orders to Purvis to support the community after this devastating tornado.
Just the Crumbs will be deployed to Bogue Chitto Baptist Church for feeding and debris clean up. Meals start on 5/8/2026 for lunch. End date is currently estimated.
