Wildfires have intensified across South Georgia over the last several days, driven by severe drought, low humidity, and windy conditions. The largest confirmed fire is the Pineland Road Fire in Clinch County, which had grown to 30,000 acres and was 10% contained as of April 23, 2026. In Brantley County, about 2 hours away, the Highway 82 Fire had grown to more than 5,000 acres and was also reported at 15% containment, with at least 47 homes destroyed, about 1000 residents evacuated, and roughly 1000 homes threatened. Smoke impacts, school disruptions, and evacuation activity have affected multiple communities in southeast Georgia as state and local crews continue suppression efforts. Details: Pineland Road Fire (Clinch County): 30,000 acres, 10% contained as of April 23; fire activity in bays and swamps has made suppression more difficult. Highway 82 Fire (Brantley County): about 5,000 acres, 15% contained; this is the fire tied to the largest confirmed housing loss and evacuation impact in Georgia so far. 53 homes lost , with damage assessments ongoing. About 1,000 people evacuated in Brantley County and 1,000 homes are currently threatened .
