The fast-moving Hawk Fire began August 22 northwest of Reno near the Somersett area and rapidly spread across Peavine Mountain and surrounding communities, driven by strong winds, extremely dry vegetation, and erratic fire behavior. As of August 24, the fire had burned approximately 15,051 acres and was 27% contained , with at least 32 homes destroyed and six additional homes damaged ; officials caution that structure-loss figures are preliminary and expected to increase as assessment teams reach additional burned areas. The fire prompted evacuation orders and warnings affecting tens of thousands of residents, caused widespread power outages, closed roads and schools, and resulted in seven confirmed injuries. Nevada declared a state of emergency for Washoe County and activated the Nevada National Guard, while local, state, federal, and international firefighting resources continue suppression and community-protection operations.
