A widespread lightning-driven wildfire outbreak has produced dozens of large fires across Oregon and Washington, forcing evacuations, destroying homes and other structures, closing major highways, and threatening tribal communities, rural towns, electrical systems, and communications infrastructure. The event includes the Akawa Butte Fire near Sisters, which was listed at 27,222 acres and 5% contained on July 27, along with the Rowe Creek Complex at 208,759 acres and 31% containment, Hay Creek Complex at 181,821 acres and 60%, Kaiser Canyon Fire at 121,417 acres and 9%, Bench and Beachcomb fires totaling 33,828 acres at 0%, and the Fox Fire at 26,445 acres and 0%. Summing the major Oregon and Washington incidents listed by NIFC produces a preliminary regional total of approximately 1.49 million acres burned. Immediate nonprofit needs include evacuation sheltering, meals, animal support, temporary housing, replacement household goods, smoke-related assistance, and eventual debris cleanup and long-term recovery.
Several thousand people have been evacuated or placed under immediate evacuation orders, including approximately 1,000 people around Nespelem, roughly 500 residents of Huntington, and thousands of residents on the Warm Springs Reservation. Many additional communities have been placed under Level 1 or Level 2 evacuation warnings.
Summing the incident figures in NIFC’s July 27 report indicates at least 133 total structures lost across the major Oregon and Washington fires, but that figure includes outbuildings and other nonresidential structures.
